拉钉是将压缩力内建于组装件构造的扣件，这个压缩力就是铆钉心轴的抗张强度，或称作折断负荷。铆钉心轴具有一个可预先测知的折断点，当铆接装配工具所施拉力到达或超过心轴的抗张强度或折断负荷时，心轴就会折断。铆钉制造业者依据的标准是工业扣件学会（IFI）114规格，产品的心轴折断负荷必须在上限和下限之间。举例来说，直径1/8'拉钉（4系列），等级编号30（钢材铆钉本体和钢材心轴）的心轴折断负荷是600～800磅（2,670～3,560N）间，使用者可以确定这个直径1/8'的钢材拉钉，以铆接装配工具施以600～800磅的力即可紧密接合。
